Narrow entrance with coat storage: dimensions, lighting and organisation without blocking circulation

An entrance does not need to look larger; it needs to welcome better, conceal daily objects and keep the first movement through the home clear.

The entrance is where everyday life changes pace. Shoes, coats, bags, post and keys arrive here, often while one person enters and another leaves. In a few square metres, movement and objects compete. A well-designed wardrobe does more than add storage: it creates a calm threshold between outside and home.

Design from actions, not photographs

List the first thirty seconds after arriving: keys down, shoes off, coat hung, bag stored and a glance in the mirror. Each action needs a position and height. Separate everyday objects from seasonal storage; the layout should follow the real sequence of use.

Measure circulation with every door open

Draw the entrance door, wardrobe fronts, shoe drawers and two people crossing. A domestic route is often more comfortable around 90 centimetres or more, but the correct dimension depends on the building, users and applicable requirements. Tape the volume on the floor before ordering.

Do not force a standard wardrobe into a narrow space

A conventional 60-centimetre wardrobe may be too deep. Shallower storage can use pull-out side rails, angled shelves and dedicated bag or shoe compartments. Reducing depth only works when the interior is redesigned around specific objects.

Choose doors by use, not style

Hinged doors give full access but need space in front. Sliding fronts protect circulation but overlap and reduce internal capacity. Pocketing or folding systems can support a multifunction niche but require more complex hardware. Consider maintenance and adjustment as well as appearance.

Bench and shoe storage without obstruction

A bench makes changing shoes natural and can conceal ventilated drawers. It must support the body without projecting too far. Use cleanable surfaces and removable upholstery; daily shoes need air rather than a sealed decorative box.

Make the mirror reflect something worth seeing

A mirror increases depth but also doubles clutter. Test the reflection from the open door and corridor. A calm wall, planting or light from the living room usually works better than exposed coats. Full height is useful; a narrow integrated panel can lighten a broad wardrobe front.

Layer welcome light and working light

One ceiling spot often leaves the wardrobe dark. Combine soft ambient light, vertical light near the mirror and integrated light only where useful. Keep drivers accessible and coordinate colour temperature with adjacent rooms.

Materials must survive the threshold

Entrances receive water, dust and knocks. Use washable panels, protected edges and details that are easy to grip with occupied hands. Timber adds warmth; matte lacquer can calm a large front. Luxury here means a finish that tolerates daily life.

Mini case: a 140-centimetre wall

One deep column stores daily coats; a neighbouring niche combines bench, mirror, shoe drawers and a tray for keys. High storage takes seasonal items and an internal socket keeps cables off the console. Two materials and one concealed light create calm through precision rather than decoration.

Pre-quote checklist

Provide a measured plan, height, door swing, intercom, electrical board, sockets, skirting, radiator and verified fixing substrates. Count coats, shoes, bags, helmets and equipment. Ask for elevation and section drawings, door clearances, ventilation, lighting and separate prices for structure, fronts, hardware, accessories, electrics and installation.
