Plasterboard ceiling with LED cove: levels, light and access to design first
Indirect light does not decorate a ceiling: it reveals its proportions, calm and imperfections.

A ceiling appears still, yet it conceals many invisible needs: cables, routes, air and sound. When an LED cove draws a luminous edge, construction becomes atmosphere. One wrong level, an unreachable driver or an uneven surface can turn poetry into glare, shadows and painful maintenance.
Begin with the room, not the cove
Define whether light should support rest, guide circulation, lift the ceiling or provide general illumination. A full luminous frame can compress a small room; one line aligned with furniture is often calmer. Draw curtains, doors, screens, speakers and viewpoints first.
Levels and proportions shape the shadow
There is no universal cove dimension. Structure, services, profile and desired effect determine the drop. A narrow recess may expose LED points; a deep one absorbs light. Check source setback, lip height and sightlines in section before site work begins.

Grazing light reveals every surface
Indirect light exposes joints, hollows and filler marks. Agree the finish, inspect it under temporary lighting and use a coherent paint system. A calm matte surface usually reflects more evenly. Design the recess so dust can actually be removed.
Strip, profile and diffuser form one system
LED tape stuck directly to plasterboard is not a lighting detail. Aluminium dissipates heat; the diffuser softens points but affects output. Density, power, colour rendering, colour temperature and circuit length must be coordinated. Build and illuminate a one-metre mock-up before closing the ceiling.
Colour temperature must keep materials truthful
Warm light can deepen beige and ochre; neutral light supports cooking and work but may cool a lounge. Keep coves, downlights and pendants within a deliberate family. View timber, stone, textiles and paint beneath the final sources at several dimming levels.
Drivers and controls must remain accessible
Drivers, controllers and connections require professional sizing, ventilation and reachable locations. An access panel may align with a join or cabinet, but replacement must not require dismantling the room. Verify the complete dimming chain to prevent flicker, hum or unstable starts.
Indirect does not mean sufficient
A cove creates atmosphere, not every task light. Tables, worktops and reading seats need dedicated layers. Separate ambient, task and accent circuits so the room can move from work to evening calm with one simple scene.

Mini case: kitchen and living room
The ceiling drop follows the kitchen service zone and leaves the living-room centre open. A cove guides entry and media wall, stopping before the glazed facade. Pendant and worktop lights remain separate; drivers sit in an accessible cabinet void. The ceiling clarifies functions without adding walls.
Site mistakes that cost twice
Closing before testing, burying drivers, failing to photograph cable routes, exposing the LED source and placing everything on one switch are expensive errors. Test before painting, record routes and preserve product codes. Premium means understandable and repairable years later.
Pre-quote checklist
Provide a furnished plan, finished height, beams, services, cove sections, driver positions, access, circuits, controls and desired scenes. Specify profile, diffuser, colour temperature, rendering, dimming, lit mock-up and finish level. Coordinate trades before closing and price structure, finish, light and controls separately.
