Floating bedside tables: heights, outlets, lighting and fixings to coordinate

A floating bedside table clears the floor, but its true lightness begins with coordinated levels and services.

Floating timber bedside table beside a bed

Every gesture beside a bed is small and precise: placing a book, switching off a light or finding water in the dark. A floating table feels calm only when height, opening, outlets and structure have been designed together.

Set the level from the actual bed

There is no universal height. Use the final mattress top with base, topper and feet selected. The table should remain reachable without lifting the shoulder. Check seated height, bedding thickness and the way the drawer is used; a level chosen before the bed can become uncomfortable after one mattress change.

Enough width and depth, never excess

Allow essentials without narrowing circulation. Check bed width, wall distance, wardrobes and curtains, and draw the open drawer in plan. Too much depth creates a corner in the route; too little leaves objects unstable. Coordinated tables can differ in size when the two sides of the room are unequal.

Floating bedside fixing, outlet and lighting detail

The fixing follows the wall

Solid masonry, hollow block, concrete, plasterboard and linings require different systems. Combine furniture weight, drawer contents and depth leverage. The designer defines geometry; the installer verifies support, anchors and reinforcement. Plasterboard backing should be prepared before closure and recorded.

Bracket and cabinet are one detail

Back panel, concealed bracket and drawer runners must be coordinated. Allow hooking, adjustment and tightening without weakening the cabinet. Adjustment helps alignment but cannot correct a badly uneven wall. Design future removal so maintenance or decorating does not require breaking the wall.

Outlets and USB begin with the gesture

Keep plates reachable without making them the visual focus. Test phone, lamp and other real devices, avoiding cables behind the drawer. Integrated USB standards change; an accessible conventional outlet is often easier to replace. A qualified electrician must define compliant positions and clearances.

Reading light and switches

Controls should be identifiable by touch and reachable from bed. Pendants and wall lights clear the surface but need exact positions relative to headboard, pillow and reading posture. Prevent direct glare and disturbance to the other sleeper. Test beam direction before drilling.

Hide cables without sealing them away

Use a grommet, correctly placed outlet or rear slot without crushing leads. Drivers and transformers need ventilation and replacement access. Avoid compressed extensions behind drawers. Photograph routes before closing linings and retain dimensions for future maintenance.

Bedroom with two floating tables and coordinated lights

Drawer action, noise and capacity

A groove, push latch or handle changes night-time use. Push-to-open is clean but demands a precise gesture; a discreet pull may be more intuitive. Suitable runners and soft closing reduce impacts. Check curtains, bed, outlets and usable internal height.

Cleaning and durable edges

Clear floor improves cleaning when the gap suits the tools used at home. Slightly softened edges protect hands and veneer. Timber, lacquer and stone react differently to water, cosmetics and heat. Specify finish and care, and view a sample under evening light.

Pre-order checklist

Record mattress height, bed width, circulation, curtains, wardrobes, wall material, reinforcement, expected load, bracket, outlets, switches, lights and cable paths. Provide a dimensioned elevation, fixing section and drawer detail. Coordinate joiner, electrician and installer before the wall closes.
