The wall behind the bed: plan the headboard, lighting and sockets without filling every gap

The bedroom’s most important wall does not need many objects: it should give the bed scale, support evening routines and leave room for rest.

A calm wall comes from aligning bed, headboard, bedside units and lights—not from adding more decoration.

The wall behind a bed often feels empty, prompting an immediate mix of pictures, panelling, shelves, colour and lamps. Yet adding everything does not automatically create intimacy. It can turn the sleeping area into a crowded display, complicate sockets and make reading uncomfortable. Begin with the real bed, clearances and the habits of the people using the room. Only then decide whether the wall should disappear, embrace the bed or become an architectural gesture.

Start with the bed and circulation

Mark the mattress, frame and bedside units on the floor. Allow realistic passage on both sides, including open drawers, curtains and wardrobes. Compose the wall around the bed’s axis, while allowing a controlled asymmetry when a window, door or wardrobe requires it. Check the view from the entrance before choosing a headboard.

How wide should the headboard be?

A headboard matching the mattress is discreet; extending beyond the bedside units creates a stable horizontal band. There is no universal size: wall width, ceiling height and adjacent furniture matter. Test two or three outlines with masking tape. A very high headboard may feel embracing but compress a low room; one that is too small can look accidental.

Bedside units and sockets: design the evening routine

The surface should be reached without sitting up and should not fight pillows or bedding. Floating units clear the floor but need suitable fixings and a height based on the finished bed. Place sockets, USB outlets and lighting controls where the installed headboard will not hide them. A dimensioned elevation before electrical work is far cheaper than correction afterwards.

Two lights, two jobs

Diffuse light creates atmosphere; reading light should be directional, screened and individually controlled. Pendants free the bedside surface, but test their height while seated: too low causes knocks, too high causes glare. A small integrated spotlight can be precise if it stays outside the other person’s view. Separate switches allow one person to read without lighting the whole room.

Materials: touch, cleaning and acoustics

Fabric and padding soften contact and reduce some sound reflection, but should be removable or easy to clean. Timber adds warmth; limewash and textured paint bring depth without projection. Avoid hard sharp edges close to the head and fragile finishes where hands touch often. View samples under evening light, not only in a showroom.

Art, shelves and niches: choose one protagonist

One artwork can be enough when scaled to the bed and safely fixed. Deep shelves above the head require caution and gather objects; an integrated niche is calmer but must be planned before finishes. If the headboard is already expressive, let the wall breathe. Empty space is what allows light, textiles and material to register.

Budget and sequence

The simplest solution may combine paint, a textile headboard and well-positioned lights. Bespoke work can integrate units, sockets and panels but needs survey and coordination. Price joinery, upholstery, electrical work, paint and installation separately. Fix the bed and dimensions first, then services, supports and finishes; buying lights or tables before the drawing can impose the wrong dimensions on everything else.

Mistakes to avoid

Do not centre the bed while ignoring wardrobe doors; do not fix sockets before knowing headboard thickness; do not rely solely on decorative pendants; and do not layer panelling, wallpaper, pictures and shelves without hierarchy. A successful wall looks simple because every element has a reason.
