Walk-in shower dimensions, slope, glass and light: designing a bathroom that stays dry
A walk-in shower is not merely a pane of glass on a floor; it is a landscape of water resolved to the millimetre.
In a well-designed walk-in shower, the bathroom seems to shed its weight. The floor continues without interruption, the glass almost disappears and light brushes the surface like morning mist. That ease is not the absence of detail but the result of precision: levels, falls, waterproofing and drainage work below, while glass and light control comfort above.
The true dimension is a moving body
Entrance width is not an isolated number. Consider turning, reaching the control, using a seat and avoiding the vanity. Around 60–70 cm may work in many homes, while accessibility requires dedicated checks and greater clearances. Tape the footprint on the floor and rehearse the movement before fixing the glass.
Depth and spray: no magic number
Containment depends on depth, shower-head position, pressure, direction and glass length. A wet zone around 120–140 cm often gives useful margin where space allows, but geometry still rules. Map the main jet, hand shower, body rebound and run-off from the glass.
Slope, drain and waterproofing
Falls must guide water without ponding and must follow the selected drain, tile format and system guidance. A linear drain may permit a single plane; a point drain changes the cuts. Verify flow capacity and specify a continuous waterproof layer with sealed corners, pipe collars and a tested drain connection.
Glass as a wall of light
Transparency makes every edge visible. The supplier must size thickness, height, hardware and bracing for the actual panel. Check walls for plumb, floor flatness and replaceable seals. A discreet inspectable profile can be more refined than a concealed detail improvised too late.
Niche, controls and daily gestures
Keep the niche away from direct spray where possible and slope its base toward the shower. Size it around real bottles. Place controls near the entrance, the hand shower within reach and the head over the useful wet zone. A bench needs comfortable proportions and drainage too.

Glass multiplies reflections and steam softens light. Combine gentle ambient light, a grazing accent on material and functional mirror light. Electrical positions and protection near water must be checked by a qualified professional. Plan any illuminated niche before tiling, including driver access.

A single glass panel runs parallel to the floating vanity. Controls sit near the entrance, the niche escapes direct spray and a wall drain coordinates with floor cuts. A dry strip remains in front of the basin; aligned glass, grout, vertical light and furniture edge make the room feel larger.

Do not order glass before finished levels, size drainage without shower flow, or mistake silicone for primary waterproofing. Prepare a measured survey, section, service layout, waterproofing detail, glass schedule and lighting plan before quotation and installation.
