When the living room echoes: design the acoustics without turning it into a studio
A room can look beautiful yet feel tiring to hear. Comfort begins when surfaces, distances and materials interrupt repeated sound reflections.
Conversation grows louder for no obvious reason, television always seems too strong and the sound of dishes remains in the air. In contemporary open plans, discomfort is not only about decibels: it is often reverberation encouraged by hard floors, glass, continuous ceilings and empty walls. The answer is not to turn the living room into a recording studio, but to distribute soft and irregular surfaces where sound keeps bouncing.
First diagnosis: hear where sound lingers
In a quiet room, clap once and listen for a metallic tail or short echo near glazing, the dining table and empty walls. This is not a professional reverberation measurement; it is a way to identify opposing hard surfaces with no interruption.
Map conversation, television, dining, music and circulation. Treat where people speak and listen rather than filling every wall. Large rooms, home cinemas and precise targets require professional acoustic measurement.
Start with the floor, at the right scale
A small rug decorates the centre but leaves most of the reflective floor exposed. It should reach at least beneath the front legs of sofa and chairs. Dense construction and an appropriate underlay add mass and stability; they may soften internal reflections but do not promise sound insulation to neighbours.
You do not need to cover the whole open plan. Define one coherent soft island, then use upholstery, curtains and books elsewhere. Check doors, robot cleaners, underfloor heating and maintenance before choosing.
Curtains work through fullness, air and continuity
A flat, taut panel has little volume. Extend the track beyond a wide window, allow generous folds and leave some air between fabric and glass. Velvet or a heavy cloth also changes light and perceived scale, but must remain compatible with ventilation, radiators and cleaning.
Do not confuse interior comfort with soundproofing. Curtains can help with medium and high-frequency reflections, but do not automatically block traffic or voices. Noise passing through windows or walls needs an envelope diagnosis.
Distribute upholstery and books
Sofa, armchair and pouf work better as a group than as a row against a wall. An angled chair breaks parallel lines and supports conversation. A bookshelf with varied depths and volumes diffuses sound better than a perfectly smooth wall, while sockets and ventilation remain clear.
The most elegant result alternates absorption and diffusion. Repeat a palette across rug, curtains and upholstery, then let timber, paper and objects create a livelier rhythm.
Acoustic panels: fewer, correctly placed
Slats on felt can frame an audio unit, dining area or niche. Check composition, thickness, declared fire performance, fixing system and genuine acoustic data. A decorative product without documentation is not a certified acoustic solution; performance depends on wall build-up, air gap and covered area.
Felt modules enable a local composition behind seating. One intentional field aligned to shelving or artwork is calmer than scattered hexagons. Sample colour and thickness before permanent adhesive and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
Work in layers and listen after each change
Begin with layout and rug, add curtains, then assess shelving and panels. After each step, listen to conversation, television at normal volume and the empty room. Changing everything at once hides what actually helped.
Set three budget levels: movable corrections, made-to-measure textiles and integrated work. True acoustic luxury is not absolute silence; it is speaking without effort and hearing without continually increasing volume.
